Dr. Matthew Stephens Discusses Stress Busters with Spectrum News

Did you know that physical therapy is not just for physical injuries but can also help soothe stress symptoms? As we navigate the stressors of the holiday season, it’s crucial to be aware of our symptoms and manage them appropriately. Physical therapy offers an effective way to do this, providing relief from stress-related pain and improving overall well-being.

Taryn Smith, a patient at Xcel Physical Therapy’s Vandalia Clinic, experiences stress in the form of intense headaches. She’s had a whirlwind of life events from graduating college in May, starting a full-time job the next day, and two weeks later beginning grad school. Many patients carry stress in their shoulders and neck, according to Dr. Matthew Stephens, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at our Vandalia Clinic.

Dr. Stephens works with Smith to relieve her pain with massage techniques and movements. These techniques are great for managing the pain head-on and can be used preventatively. “A lot of what we do here is preventative also,” he told Spectrum News. “So the stretches help keep everything open and relaxed. That can prevent future stressors, migraines and other ailments.” Dr. Stephens may also perform electrotherapy and/or dry needling to help muscles relax.

The therapy aims to help patients avoid costly surgeries, medications, and injections. “See if we can get to more of the root cause with movement, with some soft tissue work, and then give them a custom plan for at home and later in their life,” he said.
