We are excited to announce a new service that can help your patients! Our therapists at Xcel Physical Therapy have recently become Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified. This certification makes our staff specialists in golf related injuries by assessing the golf swing and utilizing a comprehensive screening tool to find movement restrictions that may lead to injury during the golf season. Our goal is to keep golfers healthy and playing all season.
The TPI screening consists of 16 movement assessments that, if limited, will lead to likely compensations and probable injury during the golf swing. After assessing for movement restrictions, a patient’s golf swing will then be video recorded and assessed for 15 golf swing characteristics. Data from these two screenings will be combined and our therapists will create an individualized treatment plan. Our therapists specialize in manual therapy techniques to help correct these movement restrictions, reduce pain, and build strength. Our patients will have access to the TPI app with videos of exercises and stretches at home given specifically to each patient to keep them on the course.
Who performs it?
Andy Schulze PT, DPT and Scott Blackburn PT, DPT of Xcel Physical Therapy are both certified through the Titleist Performance Institute to complete full body movement screening and video golf swing analysis in order to create a more efficient swing for each golfer.
What is the purpose of a golf physical screen and video swing analysis?
“There are an infinite number of ways to swing a golf club. However, there is one most-efficient way for each player to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do.”
-TPI Philosophy

At Xcel Physical Therapy, we can help determine how physical limitations in a golfer’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury. The purpose of the physical screen is to identify body limitations and assess the golfers swing style through video analysis to create the best possible swing for each golfer. The goal is to match your swing style with your body’s capabilities to keep you golfing at your best and pain free!
What does the initial evaluation consist of?
“If you don’t assess, it’s just a guess.”
To achieve an efficient swing, a golfer must first be screened. A proper screen involves an assessment of swing mechanics, biomechanics, physical fitness, movement quality, current health, and injury history.
The initial evaluation will include:
- Conversation regarding your golf game, swing tendencies, and injury history
- Physical Fitness Screen/Movement Quality
- Video analysis of your swing
- Comparison of physical screen to your video analysis of your golf swing to assess the golfer’s body-swing connection.
What happens after I complete my screening?
The results are taken from the screen and the provider creates an individualized plan for that golfer. The plan may consist of:
- Fitness training
- Physical therapy and treatment
- Coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics
- Nutrition
- Mental strategy

What are the components of the physical fitness screen?

The most common physical fitness factors that have a direct correlation to the body-swing connection and an efficient golf swing are:
- Setup posture, pelvic tilt, pelvic rotation, torso rotation, overhead deep squat, toe touch, 90/90, single leg balance, lat test, lower quarter rotation, seated trunk rotation, bridge with leg extension, cervical rotation, forearm rotation, wrist hinge, wrist flexion/extension
What happens after my first visit?
Following the initial assessment more sessions can be scheduled with a TPI-certified provider to improve upon the specific components assessed during the video swing analysis and physical fitness screen.
